Each semester, the Claremont Colleges Ballroom Dance Company hosts a Lab Competition for members of the Claremont Ballroom Dance Program. This is a fun event put on for the purpose of introducing students to ballroom competitions and giving them a chance to compete.
Current details for upcoming and recent Lab Competitions can be found here.
Who can participate?
Students of the Claremont Colleges and CCBDC Alumni with permission from the event organizer.
What should I wear?
Participants tend to wear a wide variety of outfits (from cocktail style dress to outrageous costumes), but primarily important is that whatever you choose to wear is appropriate to the dance style and modest (women, don't wear skirts that will fly up when you spin; men, don't wear trousers that don't stay up).
When should I get there?
If you don't plan on coming for the entire night (which you should), please arrive 15-30 mins before the hour of your event (e.g. if your event occurs during the 8pm-9pm slot, you should arrive between 7:30 and 7:45). Plan on staying for the entire hour.
What can I compete in?
If an event is scheduled for a specific class (e.g. Bronze East Coast Swing), then only members of the relevant class may compete in that event (e.g. Bronze Social Dance). Anyone can compete in any events with the title Open in front of them (e.g. Open Cha Cha) with some restrictions (e.g. Silver/Gold/Open students may be barred from competing in some open events to keep the playing field more even).
What is a Jack and Jill?
A Jack and Jill [wikipedia] event is very similar to musical chairs with a partner. For CCBDC Lab Competitions, you will dance with a random partner to random music, and anything goes. Dancers will be recalled to the next round as couples.
